About Sam
I’m Sam Gardner, a care-experienced speaker, former primary school teacher and creator of Lessons From The Care System™.
I spent 20 years in the care system and experienced repeated placement moves, school changes and the lasting impact of never knowing how long anything would last.
Today, I use that lived experience alongside my background in education to help adults better understand what may be happening beneath a child’s behaviour.
My work is about helping professionals see the things children often cannot explain for themselves: fear beneath anger, rejection beneath pushing people away, and the need to feel safe before they can begin to trust.
Through speaking, training and resources, I explore behaviour, belonging, placement instability and the small decisions adults make that can follow a child for years.
I believe adults have enormous power to either enable or disable a child’s future.
Why Lessons From The Care System™?
Children in care are too often understood through their behaviour, their records and the decisions made about them before they are understood as children.
Lessons From The Care System™ exists to help adults notice what the system can miss, respond with greater humanity and make choices that leave children carrying less loneliness, less shame and fewer careless endings into adulthood.
Behaviour, silence and rejection often communicate what a child cannot yet explain.
We help adults recognise the emotional world behind what they see.
See the child clearly
Belonging should never depend on luck.
Children need relationships that survive difficult moments, transitions handled with care, and adults who continue to show up.
Protect belonging
Insight should change practice.
We turn lived experience into practical changes in how adults speak, write, teach, plan, respond and make decisions.
Change the way care is practised

Sam delivered a truly inspiring keynote speech at our fostering agency’s AGM, speaking openly and powerfully to foster carers and staff about his experiences within the care system. His honesty, insight, and resilience deeply resonated with everyone in the room, offering both valuable perspective and genuine inspiration. It was a moving and memorable contribution that highlighted the profound impact of compassion, support, and understanding in the lives of young people in care. All staff and carers who attended have continued to reflect and talk about the impact of Sam’s words and we would 100% recommend that anyone in the sector takes the opportunity to hear him speak.
